The River Seine

The River Seine in Paris used to be only a channel bordered by sandy banks but in the 1800s the city goverment installed locks in order to raise its level. Nowadays there are also special reservoirs upstream that help to maintain a constant level in the river. In 1910 the river produced a flooding throughout the city due to a great period of high water. However the average depth of the Seine today at Paris is about eight metres and the average flow is very low – the depth is very strictly controlled.
