Situated at 39 rue Chateau d’eau on île-de-la-Cité in central Paris, and now converted into a restaurant, the building dates from the 16th century and is a mere 90 cm wide (well, people were smaller in those days…) and is best seen from a Paris river boat on the river Seine, where its dimensions can be truly appreciated.
It lies next door to the mythical Shakespeare & Company English language bookshop and former publishing house which under tenure of original owner Sylvia Beach first published “Ulysses” by James Joyce in 1922, and gave a helping hand to a young, struggling writer called Ernest Hemingway, giving him credit on books.
