Conceived in the 12th century and completed in the 14th, Notre Dame Cathedral was the very heartbeat of medieval Paris . The loftiness of Notre-Dame dominates the Seine and the Ile-de-la-Cité as well as the history of the French capital. The name Notre Dame means "Our Lady" in French. Seen from the exterior, the building appears to be High Gothic. Notable features include the profusion of colonnades and tracery screens, the horizontal and vertical ordering of the facades, the imposing size of the rose windows, and the delicacy of the flying buttresses.

 The site of the Notre dame is the cradle of Paris and has always been the religious center of the city. The Celts had their sacred ground here, the Romans built a temple to worship Jupiter. It was also here that Napoleon, wishing to emphasize the primacy of the state over the church, crowned himself emperor.

 Notre Dame is also famous for all children of the world thanks to the Walt Disney movie "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Inspired by the 19th century novel "Notre-Dame de Paris" by Victor Hugo, this movie shows the history of Esmeralda and Quasimodo in Middle Ages Paris.

 The bells are still rung several times daily, by human beings (but not by hunchbacks)
