The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France is an amazing iron tower beside the River Seine on Champ de Mars. It is a world famous symbol of the city and the taller structure in Paris (the second highest is the Tour Montparnasse - Montparnasse Tower).
The tower was designed by the French architect and engineer Gustave Eiffel as the entrance arch for a Universal Exhibition in celebration of the French Revolution. It was built between 1887 and 1889 - the construction took exactly 2 years, 2 months and 5 days.
It is 300 m high (1000 ft) and its total weight is 10,100 tonnes. Every seven years it has to be painted with up to 60 tonnes of paint!
