Beneath the amazing Arc de Triomphe (Arch of Triumph) in Paris, France you can visit the eternal flame of the ‘Tomb of the Unknown Soldier’ in the memory of the dead in battle that were never identified. The coffin was put in the chapel of the Arc de Triomphe in 1920 and on the slab you can read ‘Ici repose un Soldat Français mort pour la Patrie 1914–1918’ ("Here lies a French soldier who died for his country 1914–1918"). The eternal flame of this tomb inspired the one placed next to John F. Kennedy’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1962 the United States’ President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy visited the Arch in Paris. After the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 in Dallas – Texas, Jacky Kennedy requested a similar flame for the grave of her beloved husband.

As many of the monuments in Paris, the Arc de Triomphe witnessed important victory marches and events in history – Charles de Gaulle was attacked at the Arc during a parade and survived. The famous Tour de France culminates in the Arch every year.

To reach the top of the Arch of Triumph you can climb 236 steps or take a lift and then climb 46 steps. It’s totally worth it - from the top you can enjoy an amazing view of the captivating and unique City of the Lights - Paris.
