Arc de triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe, or Place de l’Etoile (Star Square), stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. Its design was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. The monument stands over 51 metres (165 ft) in height and is 45 metres wide. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. The arch honours those who fought for , particularly during the Napoleonic Wars, and today also includes the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This famous tomb is beneath the Arch and the eternal flame commemorates the dead of the two world wars. On 11 November each year, 's National Remembrance Service is held here. On 14 July, French National Day, a military parade down the Champs Elysees also begins here.This huge monument is also the world's largest traffic roundabout from where twelve avenues reach into the distance, forming an elegant twelve pointed "star". It’s a real adventure to drive around this place; people say you have to be able to cross it without fear to be a real Parisian! For an outstanding view of Paris , you’ll need to climb 284 steps to the top of the Arc de Triomphe. There’s also a museum inside, detailing the history of Arc de Triomphe. Of all the monuments of Paris, L’Etoile is one of the most revered by Parisians themselves, and an important stop on a sightseeing tour.
